30 Day Challenge- Day 4

Okay. So technically, it's 12:06 and I should be asleep and this post might say "March 14th", but it's really March 13th and I'm battling with a bout of insomnia brought about by the time change anddd...lack of tiredness. So here is day 4!

Top Five Favorite Things About The Internet

1) Uhhh, blogging. Duhhh! ;)

2) YouTube. It's such an addiction. It's bad. But I've discovered so much of my favorite music on there.

3) Browsing, shopping, researching, etc. It's so easy! (Don't I totally sound like an infomercial?) But really, it is.

4) Celebrity gossip sites. Okay, okay. I'll admit that I frequent them quite a lot...

5) ...Ahem...do I really need to even say this? It's kind of like a given, no? Facebook, of course. I like to stalk people keep up with people that I don't usually get the chance to talk to on a regular basis. So Facebook, email, etc etc.

One thing I don't like about the internet though...internet and technology...all these digital books! Kindle, Nook, iPad, iPhone, digital readers, online copies of books...and the list goes on. People are saying that pretty soon here, real, physical, beautiful books are going to be obsolete. And that is the day that I will...er...do something drastic? But no, forreal. I love books so much. Real books!

Oh, and for the record, last post said it was posted on Sunday, but I really posted it on Saturday. And this one is going to say Monday, but it's really from Sunday! Not that you care...but I was determined to do this everyday and now Blogger is ruining that dream!

...I think ranting meaninglessly is a sign of over-tiredness.

  1. Please don't hold it against me but I have a Kindle. It was given to me by a dear friend and yes, I use it. I like it that I don't have to take a bag full of books when I go on vacation or out of town. I like it that I can get for free those classics I should have read but haven't.

I own over 5000 "real" books, check out my LibraryThing account, though many of them are still in boxes since I moved. I use so many books in my teaching and I love to share a book I loved with someone. The booklover, teacher, former librarian likes the feel of a book in my hand, browsing through the pages at the bookstore or library to decide if I want to read it, seeing the beautiful covers or appreciating the illustrations especially of the Caldecott winners. I don't get these things from my Kindle but I think e-readers have a place - I love it that I have Kindle on my Blackberry so when I am stuck at the doctor's office I can read something besides old magazines.

I still buy and give "real" books and I am encouraged that a young woman appreciates the beauty of a physical book. I felt I found a kindred spirit and was hopeful about this generation.

  2. I agree. I have books on my iphone as well so that I can read them wherever I am, which is convenient. Still, for me, even if I end up buying a Kindle or other e-reader in the future, I'll always prefer the physical copies of books :)
